early boys SVC leader
05/11/04
Unioto
is off to a flying start in quest of its third straight boys Scioto
Valley Conference track and field championship.
Competing
on its own turf, the Shermans lead Zane Trace 61-43 after completion
of the field events and the 3200-meter relay Tuesday evening.
The
finals in the remaining running events will begin at 5 p.m., Friday,
at Unioto.
Unioto
won two of the first six events with Dominique Liggins leaping
a career-best 21-9 1/4 to capture the long jump by quarter of
an inch over Huntington's Matt Shoemaker.
The
quartet of Chris Edwards, Jarret Kelley, Phillip Webb and Joe
Jinks won the 3200-meter relay as Unioto finished 23 seconds in
front of runnerup Westfall.
Adena's
Jerimiah Copley won the discus and shot put events, Donavon Jenkins
of Zane Trace the high jump and Drew Prater of Southeastern the
pole vault.
If
Unioto lives up to its advance billing, the Shermans will collect

Unioto
wins Raidiger title
04/27/04
Unioto
outscored Greenfield McClain 10 points in the final two running
events to edge the Tigers 127-122 for the Raidiger Invitational
boys track and field title Tuesday evening.
The
key to the come-from-behind victory for the Shermans was a 1-2
sweep of the 3200-meter run by Zach Holbert and Neil Hertenstein.
That vaulted Unioto past McClain by three points and the 1600-meter
relay team solidified the victory by finishing ahead of McClain
in the final event.
Freshman
Dante Jackson kept McClain close with wins in the 110-meter and
300-meter hurdles en route to capturing medalist honors with 34
points. He was second in the high jump and third in the 200-meter
dash.
Joel
Eversole of Waverly was the Scott Porter Distance Award winner
with firsts in the 800-meter run and 3200-meter relay. The award
honors the memory of a former Waverly athlete, who died of cancer
in 1999 at the age of 22.
The
lone meet record was claimed by Waverly's Geoff Grimes, who tossed
the shot put 56-9 1/2 to break a 12-year-old mark of 54-3 1/2
set by another Tiger, Chris Young.

Unioto
boys win Zane Trace title
04/02/04
Unioto
flexed its muscles with a team championship in the Zane Trace
track and field invitational Friday evening by outscoring runnerup
Vinton County 157-140.
While
the Sherman win was no surprise, a strong third place finish by
Adena turned a few heads among followers of the sport in the Scioto
Valley Conference.
Adena scored 101 points with a solid showing in the sprints and
a pair of wins by Jerimiah Copley in the shot put and discus.
The
Warriors got a win in the 100-meter dash from Gary Long --who
also anchored the winning 800-meter relay -- and a pair of second
place finishes by Wyatt Adams in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
Unioto
served notice that it has the horses necessary to defend its Scioto
Valley Conference championship in May with wins in six of the
17 events.
The
Shermans' Chris Edwards, Neil Hertenstein, Chaz Smith and Jarret
Kelley combined to take the 3200-meter relay and Hertenstein captured
the 3200-meter run. Unioto also got individual wins from Dominique
Liggins in the long jump, Joe Jinks in the 1600-meter run, Tom
Oyer in the 400-meter dash and Phillip Webb in the 800-meter run.

stretch run overcame Paint Valley's Joe Depugh, whose second place
finish was part of his meet medalist performance. Depugh won the
200-meter dash and ran on the second place 800-meter relay and
third place 1600-meter relay.
