Zane Trace, Unioto SVC champs
10/14/03

Zane Trace unseated defending girls champion Southeastern in the Scioto Valley Conference cross country championships at Zane Trace Tuesday evening and Unioto won its third straight boys title behind two-time winner Zach Holbert.

The team triumphs duplicated their wins last week in the Ross County championships.

Zane Trace -- winning its first girls title since 1997 -- outscored Westfall 36-45 followed by Southeastern's 76.

Huntington sophomore Adrienne Groves won her second straight individual crown with a time of 22:11, 21 seconds better than Zane Trace's Ali Brown. Brown had beaten Groves in the Ross County championships last Thursday at Unioto.

Times took a beating in cold and near-gale winds.

Piketon's Fredie Ferguson and Ryan Pickens of Westfall stood in the way of Unioto and a perfect score of 15 as Holbert's 17:47 led six Shermans among the top eight finishers. Teammates Neil Hertenstein and Joe Jinks followed Holbert across the finish line with Ferguson taking fourth.

Unioto's Jarret Kelley was fifth, Pickens sixth and Chaz Smith and Phillip Webb of Unioto seventh and eighth. The Sherman's Jesse Bissell took 14th giving Unioto half of the 14 all-conference slots.

Only Adena in the girls competition and Southeastern in the boys failed to field full teams -- accounting for all-conference honors for the top 14 runners.

Cavs, Logan Elm invitational champs
09/06/03

Chillicothe -- led by Keegan Rathkamp -- placed four runners in the top seven finishers Saturday to win a Zane Trace Invitational boys cross country race for the second consecutive year.

A year ago, Chillicothe was the boys Division I winner, but because of competition from another invitational, Saturday's competition was run as one winner-take-all division.

One division or two mattered little to the Cavaliers as Rathkamp and teammate Joel Bendtsen finished well ahead of Unioto's Zach Holbert in 15:23 and 15:34, respectively. Holbert edged the Cavaliers' John Mergo 16:06-16:07 for third place.

Unioto's Neil Hertenstein rounded out the top five with Fredie Ferguson of Piketon sixth and Chillicothe's Justin Dreitzler seventh.

Unioto was joined by Scioto Valley Conference rivals Westfall and Piketon in the top five in team scoring with the Shermans second, Westfall fourth and Piketon fifth.

The girls team competition was much closer with Logan Elm taking home the championship hardware with 66 points (low score wins). Zane Trace (69) was second and Westfall (70) third. Defending champion Southeastern (98) was fourth.

Westfall's Tabi Carter was the individual winner in 20:14 with Huntington's Adrienne Groves five seconds back in second and freshman Elise Wyant of Zane Trace another two seconds behind Groves.

Seven of the top 10 places went to runners representing Scioto Valley Conference schools.
