Thornton stars in DII district

Westfall's Maleah Thornton added the long jump title Saturday to the high jump crown she won earlier in the week in the Division II girls district track and field championships at Washington CH.

Thornton -- a two-team Scioto Valley Conference meet medalist -- accounted for 25 of her team's 37 points and qualified for regional competition in three events. She was fourth in the 200-meter dash.

After winning the high jump at 5-3, Thornton uncorked a leap of 17-9 to win the long jump by more than a foot over her nearest challenger.

The top four in each event advance to the Division II regional Wednesday and Friday at Byesville Meadowbrook High School.

Waverly qualified for the regional in four events while Unioto was shut out of the qualifying.

Huntington wins district title

Huntington qualified for regional competition in 15 of the 17 events to lead a dominating Scioto Valley Conference performance in the Division III girls district track and field championships Friday night at Herrnstein Field/Bobo Track.

SVC teams claimed five of the top six spots in the team standings with the Lady Huntsmen taking top honors with 150.33 points. The meet was delayed for more than two hours because of lightning.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Division III regional Wednesday and Friday in Lancaster. Field events will get underway Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. with running events taking to the track at 5 p.m.

Huntington will be represented in all but the 400-meter relay and the high jump as Courtney Jenkins and Toshia Zimmerman led the way with victories in two events each. Jenkins took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and Zimmerman swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Jenkins and Zimmerman were joined by Erica Montgomery and Shandra Kellough in winning the 1600-meter relay.

Montgomery hooked up with Allison Mendenhall, Adrienne Groves and Lindley Groves to win the 3200-meter relay.

Other winners representing the SVC were Zane Trace's Elise Wyant in the 800-meter run and Shayna Cox in the high jump and the Paint Valley quartet of Courtney Countryman, Jordan Haines, Tabetha Hatfield and Ashley Romans in the 400 and 800-meter relays.

Thornton wins district high jump

Westfall's Maleah Thornton won the high jump Wednesday evening in the Division II girls district track and field championships at Washington CH.

Thornton's winning leap of 5-3 qualifies her for the Division II regional next Wednesday and Friday at Byesville Meadowbrook High School.

The top four finishers in district competition qualify for the regional.

The remaining field events will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday; opening ceremonies (parade of teams) at 12:30 and running finals at 1 p.m.

SVC dominating D-III district start

The opening night of the Division III girls district track and field championships at Herrnstein Field/Bobo Track Tuesday evening was a coming-out party for the Scioto Valley Conference.

Four of the five SVC teams in the field are in the top six teams in scoring after four events.

SVC champion Huntington leads with 26.33 points, highlighted by a 3200-meter relay victory by the quartet of Erica Montgomery, Allison Mendenhall, Adrienne Groves and Lindley Groves.

Zane Trace is third behind Nelsonville-York with 24.17 points and Southeastern and Paint Valley are fifth and sixth.

The top four in each event advance to the Division III regional next Wednesday and Friday at Lancaster.

Among the early regional qualifiers are Zane Trace and Southeastern joining Huntington in the 3200-meter relay, Ashley Dennis of Southeastern in the high jump, Ali Ianni and Amanda Adams of Zane Trace and Angela Goss of Huntington in the pole vault and Meggan Ward of Paint Valley and Amanda Doyle of Huntington in the shot put.

Huntington SVC girls champions

After an absence of two years, Huntington's Lady Huntsmen are back on top in Scioto Valley Conference girls track and field with a surprisingly easy romp to the league's team championship at Unioto Friday evening.

The Lady Huntsmen rode a trio of double winners in the individual events and wins by the 1600-meter relay and Adrienne Groves in the 3200-meter run to a 157 1/2-108 1/2 margin over defending champion Westfall.

The title is Huntington's sixth since the league began staging a girls track and field meet in 1968.

Toscha Zimmerman led the Lady Huntsmen with wins in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and anchored the winning 1600-meter relay that included Shandra Kellough, Angela Goss and Erica Montgomery.

Amanda Doyle won the discus and shot put and Courtney Jenkins captured the the 100 and 300-meter hurdle events -- giving Huntington wins in eight of the 17 events.

Westfall junior Maleah Thornton won meet medalist honors for the second straight year with wins in the high jump and long jump and seconds behind Zimmerman in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Annie Matson of Unioto took the pole vault and the Shermans won three relays -- 400, 800 and 3200-meter. Matson ran on the 3200-meter relay with Jacquie Whittle, Chastity Neff and Kendee Lovely. Lovely and Neff joined Tiffany Callihan and Jasmin Payne on the 800-meter unit and Callihan and Payne teamed with Lacy Preston and Ashley Hill to win the 400-meter relay.

Ashley Jones of Piketon swept the 800 and 1600-meter runs and Leah Hirsch of Adena captured the 400-meter dash.
