Westfall's
Jared Butts honored
11/19/03
Westfall's
Jared Butts, a two-time Scioto Valley Conference golfer
of the year, was named Pickaway County golfer of the year
at the school's annual fall sports banquet Tuesday evening.
The
award -- sponsored by Crown Hill Golf Course -- is awarded
each year to a senior golf from one of the county's four
high schools.
The
award -- first given in 2001 -- went to Jared's brother,
Jason, the first year and to Brad Sims of Logan Elm last
year. The selection is made by the four varsity coaches,
the sports editor of the Circleville Herald and a representative
of Crown Hill.
Butts
was under par in eight of the team's 16 matches this fall,
averaging 35.1 in eight SVC matches and 36.52 overall. He
was medalist in eight of the 16 matches.
He
holds 11 of the 23 individual school records for golf and
was a part of 16 of the school's 18 team records. He also
was all-SVC four years, all-SVC academic team member two
years and all-Ohio academic team member this fall.
First
all-district golf teams selected
10/27/03
Chillicothe's David
Miller is co-player of the year in Division I and five Scioto
Valley Conference players are first team selections on the first
Southeast District Golf Coaches Association all-district teams
released Monday.
Three Scioto Valley
Conference golfers -- Jared Butts of Westfall, Matt Hawthorne of
Unioto and Huntington's A. J. Michael -- have been named to the all-district golf first
team and Drew Prater of Southeastern and Steve Cory of Adena are
first team in Division III.
Miller -- a CHS
junior -- also was an Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division
first team selection. Teammate Josh Basil joins Miller on the
Division I all-district team and the Cavaliers' Matt Jones is
honorable mention.
The all-senior first
team is completed by Drew Balser and Nathan Boatman of Hillsboro
and Kirt Mowery of Washington CH.
Butts was the SVC
player of the year for the second straight year and Hawthorne was
runnerup for player of the year based on stroke average in league
matches and was a Division II state meet qualifier for the fourth
straight year. Michael was fourth in scoring average in a league
that advanced five teams to district competition.
Nathan Boatman of
Hillsboro is the Division II district player of the year. He and
Drew Balser, the Division II
individual state champion and a first team all-district choice, led Hillsboro to a second place finish
in the state tournament. Hillsboro's Dan Spidel is the district
coach of the year.
Matt Crace, a
sophomore on Piketon's first SVC championship and state tournament
team, is a member of the Division II all-district second team.
Andrew Hughes of
Southeastern and Brock Ater of Adena are on the Division III
second team.

Jared Butts of
Westfall is the player of the year on the 2003 Scioto Valley
Conference all-league golf team released Monday.
Butts -- whose
brother, Jason, won the honor in 2000 -- is player of the year for
the second straight year, based on stroke average. His 35.1
average per nine holes edged Unioto's Matt Hawthorne, who finished
with a 35.7 average.
He is the third
player in the 11-year history of SVC golf to win player of the
year honors twice and only the second to win back-to-back awards.
Prior to the 2003
season, Piketon had never won an SVC golf match.
Not only did coach
Andy Klinker's Redstreaks win a match, they won the school's first
SVC golf championship. That earned Klinker the league's coach of
the year honor in golf and five of his players landed on the
15-member all-league team.
The Redstreaks' Matt
Crace and Jared Allman ranked third and fifth this season in
stroke average and are joined on the all-league roster by
teammates Cody Robbins, Jonathan Buckler and Art Robbins. All five
are underclassmen.
Art Robbins is one
of two freshman to earn a spot on the team. The other is Unioto's
Caleb Walls.

Piketon improves
in state golf meet
10/11/03
Piketon shaved 11
strokes off Friday's opening round in the boys Division II state
golf tournament at The Ohio State University Golf Course, but
failed to move up the ladder in the 12-team field.
The youthful
Redstreaks -- with a lineup made up entirely of underclassmen --
finished 12th with a two-day total of 625. Piketon finished with a
307 Saturday to go with Friday's 318.
Unioto senior Matt
Hawthorne -- who went into Saturday's final round in third place
in the individual standings -- shot a 40-38-78 and dropped to a
tie for 26th place. Hawthorne -- a state meet qualifier all four
years of his prep career -- opened with a 36-34-70 Friday for a
two-day total of 148.
Hillsboro's Drew
Balser was the Division II individual champion with a scorching
34-30-64 Saturday to finish with a 134-total -- one better than
Lance Johnson of Hunting Valley University School. Hillsboro
finished second to Hunting Valley in the team standings 564-578.
Piketon's Jared
Allman posted a 38-36-74 Saturday to go with a 35-39-74 on Friday.
That tied him with Hawthorne for 26th place among individual
players.
Matt Crace --
38-38-76 Friday -- closed with a 40-33-73 Saturday for a 149.
Rounding out the Piketon effort were freshman Art Robbins 38-43-81
and 39-40-39 for a 160 total, Cody Robbins 40-50-90 and 38-43-81
for a 171 finish and Jon Buckler 41-46-87 and 42-41-83 for a 170.
Southeastern's Drew
Prater -- an individual qualifier in Division III -- shot a
46-41-87 Saturday after a 42-41-83 Friday. His two-day total of
170 was well off the pace of Mike Trivisonno of Gates Mills
Gilmour Academy and Cory Bradburn of Gahanna Columbus Academy.
Trivisonno and
Bradburn tied with 146 totals for the two days with Trivisonno
winning a playoff for the top spot.
Hawthorne near
top in state golf
10/10/03
Unioto's Matt
Hawthorne shot a 70 in the opening round of the boys Division II
state golf tournament Friday at the Ohio State University Golf
Course.
That leaves the
Sherman senior just four strokes back of first round leader Ryan
McGraw of Elida and one shot off the 69 posted by Brad Rogers of
Carlisle. Hawthorne -- making his fourth straight trip to the
state tournament -- is tied with four others for third place.
One of those tied
with Hawthorne, who shot a 36-34-70, is Drew Balser of Hillsboro.
In the Division II
team competition, Scioto Valley Conference champion Piketon is
last in the 12-team field with a 318. Hunting Valley University
School leads after the first round at 289.
The Redstreaks --
making their first state tournament appearance -- feature an
all-underclassmen lineup.
Jared Allman led
Piketon's opening day effort with a 35-39-74 and Matt Crace turned
in a 38-38-87. Freshman Art Robbins carded a 38-43-81, junior
Jonathan Buckler a 41-46-87 and Cody Robbins a 40-50-90. Allman,
Crace and Cody Robbins are sophomores.
In Division III,
Southeastern senior Drew Prater shot an opening round 42-41-83 and
is well off the pace of a 37-34-71 set by Cory Bradburn of Gahanna
Columbus Academy.
Another 18-hole
round is on tap for all state meet participants beginning at 8:30
a.m., Saturday.
Westfall girls
advance to district
10/01/03
Westfall finished
second to Marietta in a girls sectional golf tournament Wednesday
at Upper Lansdowne to advance to the district Tuesday at The Links
at Echo Springs, Johnstown.
Marietta breezed to
the sectional championship with a 337 total to Westfall's 408 -- a
team scoring record. Westfall's Audra Pack also set a school
record with a 97.
Rounding out the
eight-team field were Logan Elm 440, Miami Trace 467, Greenfield
McClain 488, Jackson 491, Trimble 500, Hillsboro 540.
There is only one
division for the 2003 girls golf tournaments.
Rounding out
Westfall's scoring were Holly Finch 103, Suzanne Gerhardt 103 and
Bryce Hammond 105. Match medalist was Marietta's Megan Swaney with
a two-over-par 73.
Westfall finished third in a five-team sectional.
Two teams and the
top two individuals from the district advance to the state
tournament Oct. 17-18 at the Ohio State University Golf Course.
Southeastern's
Prater to state
09/30/03
Southeastern failed
to qualify by one stroke for the boys Division III state golf
tournament as a team, but senior Drew Prater qualified as an
individual in the Division II district tournament at Cooks Creek
Tuesday.
Chesapeake (358) and
Portsmouth Notre Dame (369) claimed the two qualifying spots as
Southeastern came in with a 370.
The top two teams
and top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the
state tournament Oct. 10-11 at the Ohio State University Golf
Course.
Prater shot a
41-42-83 -- the third best round of the day -- to claim one of the
two individual spots.
Following
Southeastern in the team scoring were Lucasville Valley 371,
Portsmouth Clay 376, Leesburg Fairfield 384, Trimble 385 and Zane
Trace 403.
Scores soared on a
brisk, cold day as Steve Cory of Adena carded an 47-42-89 and Western's
Nick Flint a 121 as individual qualifiers from sectional
competition. Cory's round was seventh overall out of 48 golfers in
the field.
Rounding out
Southeastern's scoring were Andrew Hughes 47-43-90, Scott Stauffer
46-45-91, Trevor Francis 52-54-106, Brandon Davis 63-46-109.
Zane Trace scoring
was Ryan Mays 94, Nick Bloomfield 101, Cody Chenault 103, Nate
Bloomfield 105 and Logan Green 107.
Piketon to state
in Division II
09/29/03
Piketon finished
second Monday in the Division II boys district golf tournament at
Cooks Creek to advance to the state tournament for the first time
in school history.
Coach Andy Klinker's
Redstreaks -- Scioto Valley Conference champions -- tied with
Hillsboro for low score at 318.
Hillsboro got the
nod as the district champion by comparing scores of each team's
fifth player. Only the top two teams and two low scoring
individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state
tournament Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11, at the Ohio State
University Golf Course.
Huntington finished
a distant third at 347, followed by Unioto and Belpre 348, Ironton
351, West Union 356 and Portsmouth West 397. Unioto had the better
fifth score to take fourth place over Belpre -- giving the Scioto
Valley Conference three of the top four spots.
Jordy Wagner of
Logan Elm was the low individual not on a qualifying team with a
79 and Matt Hawthorne of Unioto and Aaron Taylor of Circleville
tied for second with 80s. The two halved the first hole of a
playoff with Hawthorne earning the state meet berth with par on
the second hole while Taylor took a bogey five.
Taylor saved par on
the first hole with a putt of approximately 10 feet. Hawthorne
halved the par 5 hole with a putt from five feet away after both
needed four strokes to reach the green
Hawthorne advances
to the state tournament as an individual for the second straight
year after making it as a member of Unioto teams that qualified
when he was a freshman and sophomore.
Following Hawthorne
on the course in his playoff were coach Andy Klinker and his
Redstreaks.
Piketon -- which won
its first SVC match ever in winning the league championship for
the first time this season -- was playing in its first district
with a lineup made up entirely of underclassmen.
One of those --
sophomore Jared Allman -- was the meet medalist with a 74 -- just
two over par on a cold, blustery day with wind gusts of 15-20 mph.
Sophomore Cody Robbins shot a 77, sophomore Matt Crace 80,
freshman Art Robbins 87 and junior Jonathan Buckler 94.
"This is new
territory for us," Klinker said of his team's state
tournament berth, "but exciting territory. We're looking
forward to going up there and competing."
Huntington's A. J.
Michael shot an 81 to miss the playoff by one shot while the
Huntsmen's Chris Fraley had an 87, Zac Bowling 88, Aaron Chaney 91
and James Butler 94.
Joining Hawthorne
for the Shermans were Jon Palmer 85, Caleb Walls 91, Travis Bell
92 and Justin Daily 95.
Five SVC golf
teams advance to districts
09/24/03
The Scioto Valley
Conference will be represented by five teams next week in district
golf tournaments with the addition Wednesday of Unioto and
Huntington from a Division II sectional at Jaycees Golf Course and
Piketon from a Division II sectional at Shawnee State Park.
They join Zane Trace
and Southeastern, which finished first and second, respectively,
Tuesday in a Division III sectional at Jaycees.
Unioto finished
second to Hillsboro in the 17-team Division II field at Jaycees followed by
Belpre and Huntington.
Hillsboro distanced
itself from the rest of the field with a 307 followed by Unioto's
319, Belpre 322 and Huntington 324. Westfall tied for eighth with
Warren Local at 344.
Those four teams
advance to the Division II district at Cooks Creek Golf Course
Monday. Play will begin at 9 a.m.
Advancing to the
Division II district from Shawnee State Park are West Union,
Piketon, Ironton and Portsmouth West. Piketon's Scioto Valley
Conference champions shot a 322 team total to trail only West
Union's 314. It is the first time in school history that Piketon
has advanced to the district in golf.
The top two teams
and two two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance from
the district to the state tournament Oct. 10-11.
Advancing as
individuals from Jaycees are Kirt Mowery of Washington CH (75), Jordy Wagner of
Logan Elm and Aaron Taylor of Circleville with a pair of 76s and
Jon Sprague of Fairfield Union with a 78. Mowery also qualified as
an individual in 2002.
Medalist honors went
to Jason Waggoner of Hillsboro with a one-over-par 73.
Piketon's Matt Crace
was the medalist at Shawnee with a 73. Rounding out the Redstreak
effort were Cody Robbins with an 80, Jared Allman 82, Jon Buckler
87, and Art Robbins 90. Waverly finished ninth in the 16-team
field at 355.
Waverly's scoring
was Steven Ramey 85, Nathan Tewksberry 86, Blair Taylor 91, T. J.
McCleery 93.
Unioto -- just two
years removed from its last state tournament appearance under
coach Dan Drummond -- will be playing in the district for the
ninth consecutive year. Matt Hawthorne and Travis Bell led
the Shermans with a pair of 79s. Justin Daily shot an 80 and Jon
Palmer and Caleb Walls 81s.
Huntington is making
its third straight trip to district competition, but coach Kelly
Mathis' Huntsmen have stepped up a division. Huntington missed a
state tournament berth by one stroke last season after finishing
third in the Division III sectional.
A. J. Michael led
the Huntsmen with a 76, followed by Zac Bowling 81, James Butler
82 and Chris Fraley and Aaron Chaney 85s.
Jared Butts led
Westfall with an 80, followed by Josh Barker 86, Zane Gregg 88,
John Roush 90 and Shelby Adams 94.
Team scoring at
Shawnee State Park: 1. West Union 314, 2. Piketon 322, 3.
Ironton 331, 4. Portsmouth West 333, 5. Eastern Brown 344, 6.

Division III golf sectional
09/23/03
Two teams that
struggled this season in the highly-competitive Scioto Valley
Conference came to life Tuesday in the Division III sectional golf
tournament at Jaycees Golf Course.
Zane Trace led the
field with a 339 team total, followed by Southeastern's 349.
They advance --
along with Leesburg Fairfield (359) and Trimble (364) -- to the
Division III district next Tuesday at Cooks Creek Golf Course.
The top four teams
and top four individuals not on a qualifying team move on to the
district competition. Advancing as individuals are Nick Flint (84)
of Western, Steve Cory (86) of Adena and J. Owen (88) and Dunn
(89) of Reedsville Eastern.
Zane Trace got five
rounds in the 80s to advance to the district for the first time
since the Pioneers made back-to-back trips in 1999-00. Nate

43-41-84, Ryan Mays 43-42-85, Nick Bloomfield 44-43-87 and Cody
Chenault 41-48-89.
The sectional
medalist is Southeastern's Drew Prater, who shot a 42-40-82. The

since the late 90s.
Rounding out the
Southeastern effort were Andrew Hughes 45-40-85, Brandon Davis
44-45-89, Scott Stauffer 45-48-93 and Trevor Francis 52-45-97.

Piketon won the
final Scioto Valley Conference match of the season Monday at
Jaycees Golf Course to clinch the Redstreaks first league golf
championship.
The championship is
Piketon's first in any sport since Kim Conley's Lady Redstreaks tied
Zane Trace for the 1998-99 girls basketball crown.
Coach Andy Klinker's
golfers entered Monday's two rounds with a 43-40 lead over
defending and nine-time champion Unioto. The Shermans won the
first nine-hole match to cut Piketon's team lead to 49-48.
With sophomores Matt
Crace and Jared Allman leading the way, Piketon won the final
nine-hole match to clinch the championship 57-55 over Unioto with
Huntington five points back. Points are awarded on the
basis of eight points for the winner of each match, seven for
second, six for third, etc.
Led by senior Matt
Hawthorne's 37, Unioto shot a 162 to win the first nine-hole
match. Huntington matched the Sherman total, but had to settle for
second place on the basis of fifth man scores. Piketon was four
shots back at 166.
Crace and Allman --
part of an all-underclassman lineup -- each shot a 38 on the back
nine to lead the Redstreaks to the day's low nine-hole total (155)
and the championship. Unioto was second at 161 and Huntington
third at 164.
Piketon's lineup
Monday consisted of junior Jonathan Buckler, sophomores Crace,
Allman, Cody Robbins and Craig McCann and freshman Art
Robbins.
When the all-league
golf squad is released Thursday, Westfall's Jared Butts will repeat as the SVC's player of the year
in golf. Jared's brother, Jason,
is a previous player of the year winner.
Butts had Monday's
best nine-hole score -- a 35 on the back nine. Crace carded the
day's best 18-hole total -- a 38-38-76 -- while Butts turned in a
42-35-77 and Hawthorne a 37-40-77.
