Junior high boys basketball

Area team qualifies for nationals

04/27/04

An Ohio Youth Basketball team comprised of seventh grade players from area schools has won the Lancaster Classic to qualify for national competition.

The Pacers -- coached by former Adena and Ohio University-Chillicothe player David Cochenour -- went 5-0 in a field of approximately 30 teams.

Members of the team are Buddy Barnes, Logan Hauserman and Clay Roll of Adena, Ryan Borden of Jackson, Bryant Gibson of Westfall, Dale McCullough and D. J. Merriman of Zane Trace and Eddie Robbins and Cody Smith of Piketon.

Adena wins 7th grade tournament

Adena captured the Southeastern 7th Grade Invitational Thursday evening with a 50-35 win over Huntington.

Piketon -- which entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed -- defeated Unioto 56-46 in the consolation game.

Adena knocked off Piketon in the semifinals and rode the 25-point scoring of Buddy Barnes and 12 points from Clay Roll to the championship victory. Craig Magill and Drew Trusty led Huntington with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cody Smith poured in a tournament high 38 points to lead Piketon past Unioto. Eddie Robbins added 12 for the Redstreaks and Joey Conley scored 17 points and Seth Frejkowski 15 for Unioto.

Chillicothe wins OCC tournament

Chillicothe Middle School won the Ohio Capital Conference Southwest City Schools boys eighth grade basketball tournament Thursday evening with a 54-31 rout of Grove City Norton in the championship game.

Mike Newman paced the Cavaliers with 19 points and Anthony Hitchens added 14 and Clay Ragland eight.

Chillicothe finishes the season 7-9.

Two tournament finals set

Chillicothe Middle School advanced to the finals of a boys eighth grade basketball tournament at Grove City Pleasantview with a 47-35 win over Pickerington Lakeview Tuesday evening.

In the Southeastern 7th Grade Invitational, Adena and Huntington will square off at 7:30 p.m., Thursday for the championship. That will follow the consolation game with Unioto and Piketon at 6 p.m.

Piketon (12-2) -- the No. 1 seed in the tournament -- was upset in Tuesday evening's semifinals by fifth-seeded Adena (9-4) and Huntington (11-4) defeated Unioto (9-6) 45-37. Huntington was seeded No. 2 and Unioto No. 3.

Chillicothe plays in the championship game at 7 p.m., Thursday, at Pleasantview.

Anthony Hitchens scored 25 points and Cody Speakman for the Cavaliers in defeating the tournament's No. 1 seed.

Drew Trusty poured in 25 points and Corey Cottrill 14 in Huntington's win over Unioto. Joshua Bever scored 11 points and Joey Conley 10 for Unioto.

Semifinals set in 7th grade tourney

Piketon, Adena, Unioto and Huntington were first round winners in the Southeastern 7th Grade Invitational basketball tournament Saturday.

The semifinals Tuesday will match Piketon and Adena at 6 p.m. with Unioto and Huntington squaring off at 7:30 p.m.

The consolation game will be played at 6 p.m., Thursday, with the championship at 7:30.

First round results:

Piketon 45 (Cody Smith 19, Eddie Robbins 16), Paint Valley 27 (Josh Long 13).

Adena 43 (Buddy Barnes 17, Eamon Boyle 10), Westfall 33 (Brandon Peacock 11, Tyler Cobb 10).

Huntington 8th grade tourney champs

Huntington's regular season champions added the Scioto Valley Conference eighth grade tournament championship to their hardware with a 39-37 win over Westfall Wednesday evening.

The championship thriller was similar to their regular season meeting won by Huntington 65-61 in triple overtime.

Josh Kellough led the Huntsmen with 12 points and Phillip Hartley and Seth Harden shared scoring honors for the Mustangs with 10 points apiece.

Beau Dailey and Corey Keister combined for 40 points to lead Zane Trace past Unioto 61-50 in the consolation game. Dailey scored 22 points and Keister 18 while Randy Rue's 14 were high for the Shermans.

Monday's semifinals:

Chillicothe 8th grade boys win 39-25

The Chillicothe Middle School eighth grade boys advanced to the semifinals of a tournament at Grove City Pleasantview with a 39-25 win Tuesday evening over Grove City Jackson.

The Cavaliers return to Pleasantview for a 5:30 p.m. semifinal Tuesday against Pickerington Lakeview. Chillicothe defeated Lakeview in overtime during the regular season.

Balanced scoring was the key in the team's win over Jackson as Mike Newman scored nine points, Anthony Hitchens eight and Curtis Baker seven.

The Chillicothe seventh graders defeated Norton Middle School in another tournament at Finland Middle School in Columbus and advance to a game at 7 p.m., Monday, against Columbus Brookpark Middle School.

Semifinals (Monday, Feb. 2) -- Huntington/Piketon winner vs Unioto/Adena winner, 5 p.m.; Zane Trace/Paint Valley winner vs Westfall/Southeastern winner, 6:30 p.m.

Huntington, Piketon win titles

Huntington's eighth graders and the Piketon seventh graders won Scioto Valley Conference boys junior high basketball titles Wednesday evening.

Huntington's eighth graders defeated Zane Trace to cap off a perfect 7-0 SVC campaign while Piketon downed Southeastern 48-23 to win the seventh grade title with help from Westfall. Westfall knocked Unioto out of a shot at sharing the seventh grade crown 66-34.

In other eighth grade games, Adena defeated Paint Valley, Westfall downed Unioto 50-33 and Southeastern recorded its first SVC win 46-36 over Piketon.

Kyle Prater and Brad Depugh combined for 34 points to power Southeastern past Piketon. Prater canned 19 points and Depugh 15.

Seth Harden led a trio of Westfall players in double figures as the Mustangs defeated Unioto. Billy Fullen added 13 points and Jack Gose 11 for Westfall. Ken Corcoran scored nine points for Unioto.

In other seventh grade games, Huntington defeated Zane Trace and Adena downed Paint Valley.

Cody Smith scored 17 points and Kenny Helton 11 to lead Piketon past Southeastern, which got six points from Nik Brenke and five from B. J. Bevins.

Drawings for the seventh and eighth grade tournaments will be conducted Thursday evening.

SE 7th graders get historic win

01/22/04

Southeastern's seventh grade boys came from behind to defeat Jackson 29-28 in junior high basketball Thursday evening for the first victory by a Panther boys team in the new Southeastern Middle School gymnasium.

Nathan Hurles scored the go-ahead basket with 23 seconds left and Southeastern held on to improve to 2-9 overall. Hurles, Nik Brenke and Jeremy Dennis scored six points each for the winners.

In eighth grade action Thursday, Jackson defeated Southeastern 56-36 and Hilliard Heritage downed Chillicothe 48-29.

Kyle Prater's 20 points and Brad Depugh's 10 led Southeastern's eighth graders while Dill led Jackson with 13 and Bowling added 12.

Anthony Hitchens scored 12 points and Jacob Zamora six as Chillicothe lost its second game of the week to a Hilliard Middle School. The Cavaliers (4-9) were defeated by Hilliard Weaver 51-33 Tuesday evening as Mike Newman scored 14 points and Hitchens 10.

Huntington clinches title share

Huntington clinched at least a share of the Scioto Valley Conference boys eighth grade basketball championship with a 50-30 win over Unioto Wednesday evening.

Westfall (5-1) remained a game back of the Huntsmen (6-0) with a 59-26 win over Piketon while Adena downed Southeastern 47-39 and Paint Valley rallied past Zane Trace for an overtime victory.

Josh Kellough scored 20 points and Bobby Sams 10 to keep Huntington unbeaten in league games while Ken Corcoran led Unioto with eight points.

Brandon Kinnamon led Adena past Southeastern with 20 points while Kyle Prater scored 17 points for the Panthers.

Piketon and Unioto share first place in seventh grade basketball after Piketon outlasted Westfall 62-51 and Unioto defeated Huntington 62-38. Piketon and Unioto are 5-1 and Huntington 4-2 in league play.

Joey Conley poured in 25 points and Josh Bevers 18 for Unioto and Cody Cottrill had 17 and Drew Trusty nine for Huntington.

Cody Smith's 28 points led Piketon past Westfall while Kenny Helton added 17 points and Eddie Robbins 13. Brian Gibson had 18 and Tyler Cobb 12 points for the Mustangs.

Clay Roll scored 17 points to lead Adena past Southeastern, which got 10 points from Nathan Hurles and eight from Denver Snyder.

Unioto 7th graders top Paint Valley

Unioto defeated Paint Valley 46-34 in boys seventh grade basketball Monday evening.

Joey Conley led Unioto (7-4) with 12 points and David Leachmakn added 11. Josh Long had 14 points and Justin Mays 10 for the Bearcats.

Chillicothe 8th graders fall 62-52

Hilliard Memorial defeated Chillicothe 62-52 in boys eighth grade basketball Thursday evening.

Mike Newman led Chillicothe (4-7) with 16 points and Curtis Baker added 11.

Huntsmen retain SVC 8th grade lead

01/14/04

Huntington retained its lead in Scioto Valley Conference boys eighth grade basketball with a win over Piketon Wednesday evening.

However, Zane Trace defeated Southeastern 52-23, Westfall downed Paint Valley 62-20 and Unioto got by Adena 40-30 to remain just one game behind the league leaders.

Corey Keister scored 13 points and Bower had nine points and nine steals in Zane Trace's victory. Brad Depugh led Southeastern with 10 points.

Unioto was led by Ken Corcoran with 13 points and Jeff Woods with 10 while Adena's Brandon Kinnamon also scored 10 points.

In seventh grade action, Huntington defeated Piketon 36-29 to create a three-way tie for first place in the SVC standings with Unioto, a 53-49 winner over Adena in overtime.

Westfall downed Paint Valley 46-27 and Zane Trace was a 31-21 winnver over Southeastern.

Drew Trusty had 16 points and Corey Cottrill 13 as Huntington handed Piketon its first SVC loss. Cody Smith led the Redstreaks with 20 points.

Joey Conley scored 22 points and Seth Frejkowski and David Leachman eight each in Unioto's win while Clay Roll and Buddy Barnes led Adena with 22 and 10 points, respectively.

Dale McCullough led Zane Trace with 12 points in the Pioneer win over Southeastern, which got five points from Jeremy Dennis.

Chillicothe 8th graders fall 42-36

Chillicothe Middle School lost to Groveport North 42-36 in boys eighth grade basketball Tuesday evening.

Anthony Hitchens led Chillicothe (4-6) with 16 points and Nathan Woodruff added eight.

Chillicothe 8th graders win

The Chillicothe Middle School Cavaliers defeated Pickerington Lakeview 40-38 in overtime Thursday evening to improve to 4-5.

Anthony Hitchens scored 16 points and Mike Newman 14 for Chillicothe.

The Cavaliers lost to Reynoldsburg 36-34 Tuesday evening as Hitchens scored 12 points.

Huntington 8th graders 4-0 in SVC

Huntington defeated Southeastern 47-27 Wednesday evening to remain the only unbeaten team in Scioto Valley Conference boys eighth grade basketball.

Zane Trace handed Piketon a 55-30 defeat, Westfall downed Adena 44-30 and Unioto slipped past Paint Valley 39-36 to remain just one game back of the league leaders.

Josh Kellough poured in 24 points in Huntington's win at Southeastern and Kyle Prater scored 14 for the Panthers.

Corey Keister's 17 points and 10 from Caleb Davis led Zane Trace past Piketon while Cody Brietenbach led the Redstreaks with 13 points.

Ken Corcoran was Unioto's leading scorer against Paint Valley while A. J. Knisley had 11 points for the Bearcats.

In seventh grade games Wednesday, Piketon remained unbeaten in the SVC with a 36-28 win over Zane Trace while Unioto defeated Paint Valley 40-31, Huntington beat Southeastern 45-19 and Adena edged Westfall 47-46 in a two-overtime thriller.

Cody Smith's 18 points led Piketon's SVC seventh grade leaders past Zane Trace, which got 11 points from Dale McCullough.

Drew Trusty had 15 points and Craig Magill 12 in Huntington's win while Joseph Hall led Southeastern with six points and Nik Brenke added four.

Jory Conley and Joshua Bever had 10 and nine points, respectively, to lead Unioto past Paint Valley, which was led by Josh Long and Colton Morrison with nine points apiece.

Zane Trace sweeps Paint Valley

Zane Trace swept Paint Valley in boys junior high basketball Monday evening, winning the eighth grade game 62-28 and the seventh grade game 41-21.

Huntington and Unioto split a pair of games with Huntington winning the eighth grade contest 49-34 and Unioto the seventh grade game 39-35. Jackson took two from Southeastern, 44-38 in the eighth grade game and 47-27 in the seventh grade contest.

Corey Keister poured in 21 points for the Zane Trace eighth graders and Jarod Lawhorn led Paint Valley with seven points.

Dale McCullough and D. J. Merriman led the Zane Trace seventh graders with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Bobby Sams had 19 points and Jason Kellough 13 for the Huntington eighth graders and Jeff Woods nine for Unioto.

In the seventh grade game, David Leachman had 12 points and Jory Conley 11 for Unioto and Drew Trusty 17 and Craig Magill 12 for Huntington.

Kyle Prater sank four three-point baskets to lead Southeastern's eighth graders with 24 points and Logan Clark added 10. Mason Hurles and Jeremy Dennis scored nine points each for the Panther seventh graders.

SE 7th graders get first win 24-14

Southeastern's seventh grade boys defeated Waverly 24-14 in junior high basketball Saturday for the Panthers' first win of the season.

Nik Brenke led the 1-5 Panthers with eight points and Jeremy Dennis and Denver Snyder added five apiece.

Waverly won the eighth grade game 47-13.

Westfall swept a pair of games from Madison Plains -- 52-30 in the eighth grade game and 46-31 in the seventh grade encounter.

Chillicothe nips Unioto eighth graders

Chillicothe Middle School's Mike Newman hit a last-second basket to lift the Cavaliers to a 44-43 win over Unioto in boys eighth grade basketball Monday evening.

Newman finished with nine points as Anthony Hitchens poured in a game-high 24 points for the Cavaliers. Ken Corcoran scored 15 points and Jeff Woods 11 for Unioto (2-5).

Adena downs Unioto eighth graders

Adena defeated Unioto 32-25 in boys eighth grade basketball Monday evening.

Brandon Kinnamon led the Warriors with 11 points and Chris Kerns topped Unioto with seven points.

Vinton County swept two games from host Unioto to cap off the annual Unioto Junior High School Christmas Classic Saturday.

Two girls games kicked off the event Friday evening with eight boys games Saturday.

Huntington tops 8th grade standings

Huntington defeated Paint Valley 43-23 to take over sole possession of first place in Scioto Valley Conference boys eighth grade basketball Wednesday evening.

Justin Kellough and Bobby Sams shared scoring honors for the Huntsmen with 11 points each. A. J. Knisley had nine points and Paul Williams six for Paint Valley. 

Huntington is 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the SVC.

In other eighth grade games, Unioto defeated Southeastern 45-38, Westfall handed Zane Trace its first league loss and Adena downed Piketon.

Jeff Woods led Unioto past Southeastern with 17 points and Kyle Prater scored 19 points and Logan Clark nine for the Panthers.

In seventh grade games, Huntington was a 48-27 winner over Paint Valley, Zane Trace handled Westfall 44-32, Unioto defeated Southeastern 40-18 and Piketon downed Adena.

Drew Trusty scored 20 points and Corey Cottrill 18 for the Huntington seventh graders and Josh Long had eight points and Branson Shepard six for Paint Valley.

Unioto's Conley led the Shermans with 10 points and Denver Snyder, Nik Brenke and Levi Yeager had four points apiece for Southeastern.

Zane Trace sweeps Southeastern

Zane Trace swept a pair of boys junior high basketball games from Southeastern Monday evening.

The Pioneer eighth graders won 55-42 behind Corey Keister's 19 points -- 15 in the first half -- and 13 from Ben Bower. Zane Trace sealed the win with 7-for-7 shooting from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Prater poured in 28 points for Southeastern, including four three-point baskets.

Dale McCullough and Casey Wrightsel scored eight points apiece to lead the Zane Trace seventh graders to a 32-16 win. Jeremy Dennis and Josh Monroe had seven and four points, respectively, for Southeastern.

Westfall split with Jonathan Alder, winning the eighth grade game 39-29 and falling 48-25 in the seventh grade contest.

Piketon, Huntington 7th grade winners

Piketon and Huntington were winners in boys seventh grade basketball Saturday.

Huntington defeated Paint Valley 41-25 and Piketon was a 40-33 winner over Coal Grove as Cody Smith scored 19 points and Eddie Robbins eight for the Redstreaks (3-0).

In eighth grade action, Greenfield McClain edged Unioto 36-35 as A. Anderson and G. Case led the winners with nine points apiece. Matt Workman scored 13 points for Unioto (1-2, 1-1).

Chillicothe eighth grade loses in overtime

Grove City Jackson defeated Chillicothe Middle School 34-31 in overtime in boys eighth grade basketball Thursday evening.

The Cavaliers (2-3) failed to score after ending regulation play in a 31-31 tie. Nathan Woodruff led Chilllicothe withk 10 points.

Chillicothe will play Huntington in the Unioto Christmas Classic, Saturday, Dec. 20.

Huntsmen win in three overtimes!

12/10/03

Huntington outlasted Westfall 65-61 in a three-overtime thriller in Scioto Valley Conference boys eighth grade basketball Wednesday evening.

The two teams were deadlocked 47-47 at the end of regulation play and Huntington's Zach Riley sent the game into the final overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the second overtime.

Josh Kellough led the Huntsmen with 26 points and Riley finished with 10. Jack Gose had 23 points and Phillip Hartley 18 for Westfall.

In other eighth grade games, Unioto defeated Piketon 47-25 and Paint Valley downed Southeastern 56-45 and Zane Trace topped Adena.

Matt Workman and Clinton Brown led Unioto with nine and eight points, respectively, and Josh Blanton and Jimmy Nier led Piketon with five points apiece.

Paint Valley pulled away from Southeastern after a 23-23 first half. Jarod Lawhorn led Paint Valley with 24 points and A. J. Knisley added 17, including four three-point baskets. Kyle Prater and Logan Clark had 12 points each and Clay Dennewitz 11 for the Panthers.

In seventh grade games, Westfall got past Huntington 42-36, Piketon defeated Unioto 45-34, Adena topped Zane Trace and Paint Valley downed Southeastern 46-18.

Brandon Peacock and Tyler Cobb scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Westfall's seventh graders and Huntington's Drew Trusty poured in 20 points.

Cody Smith poured in 24 points for Piketon, which also got 11 points from Kenny Helton in the Redstreaks win over Unioto.

Chillicothe Middle School's eighth graders were defeated by Pickerington Ridgeview 36-20 in Ohio Capital Conference middle school boys basketball Tuesday evening.

Mike Newman led the Cavaliers (2-2) with four points.

Chillicothe plays Jackson Thursday.

SVC junior high races begin

Scioto Valley Conference boys junior high basketball got underway Monday evening with Westfall, Huntington and Zane Trace posting eighth grade victories.

Paint Valley's eighth graders actually got the jump on the rest of the league with a win Saturday over Piketon.

Westfall defeated Southeastern 58-24 and Zane Trace was a 47-34 winner over Unioto. Corey Keister led Zane Trace with 18 points and Kenny Corcoran scored 11 for Unioto.

Seventh grade winners were Piketon, Westfall, Huntington and Unioto.

Peacock and Fausnaugh shared scoring honors with 14 points each as Westfall defeated Southeastern 56-15. Nik Brenke led Southeastern with eight points.

Huntington overcame a 17-13 halftime deficit to edge Adena 30-29 behind Corey Cottrill with 12 points and Craig Magill with 10. Buddy Barnes led Adena with 13 points and Clay Roll added 10.

Josh Bever scored nine points and Hobey Cottrell seven to lead Unioto past Zane Trace 30-22. Dale McCullough had seven points and D. J. Merriman six for Zane Trace.

Groveport South tipped in a missed free throw for the winning basket in a 35-34 win over Chillicothe Middle School's eighth graders Thursday evening.

The loss is the first for Chillicothe after starting the season 2-0.

Groveport South went to the line for a pair of free throws trailing Chillicothe 34-33. South missed both free throw attempts, but the second was tipped in with time running out.

Anthony Hitchens led Chillicothe with 12 points and Nathan Woodruff added nine.

Chillicothe Middle School 2-0

Chillicothe Middle School's eighth graders improved to 2-0 with a 42-41 win over Grove City Brookpark in Ohio Capital Conference boys junior high basketball Tuesday evening.

Both Chillicothe wins have come against OCC opponents.

Anthony Hitchens led Chillicothe with 22 points and Curtis Baker added nine.

Chillicothe plays Groveport South Thursday.

Chillicothe Middle School 8th wins

Chillicothe Middle School's eighth grade boys opened their season with a 61-44 win at Grove City Finland Tuesday evening.

Anthony Hitchens led Chillicothe with 35 points.
