04/22/04

Cynthia King, a Zane Trace elementary teacher, has been hired as head coach of the school's volleyball program.

King, an Adena High School graduate, served as an assistant under Laura Smith at Adena in 1985. The former Cynthia Smalley, King is assuming her first head coaching position.

She succeeds Jim Hutton, who stepped down after two seasons.

Ron Hall to be inducted into Hall of Fame
12/01/03

Ron Hall, a boys basketball coaching legend in southern Ohio in the late 60s and 70s, has been inducted into the McDonald's Tip-Off Classic Hall of Fame at Zane Trace.

A graduate of Chillicothe High School, Hall took Zane Trace to the state basketball tournament in 1969-70. He had two Adena teams in the regionals in the mid 70s before leading Miami Trace to the state tournament in 1977-78.

He also coached one year at Chillicothe under Howard "Corky" Miller, the 2002 inductee into the Tip-Off Classic Hall of Fame.

He becomes the fifth member of the hall, joining Miller, Larry Jordan, Mike Smith and Pete Dunkle.

Hall, who retired in 1980, is a substitute teacher in the Marion Local School District.

Kick return sparks Mustangs 38-7
10/24/03

Senior Mike Angles stunned Zane Trace with an 82-yard kickoff return after the Pioneers had scored their only touchdown to spark playoff-bound Westfall to a 38-7 win over Zane Trace in Scioto Valley Conference football Friday night.

Brice Redman had staked Westfall (9-1, 6-1) to a 14-0 first quarter lead with scoring runs of four and one yards and Tomas Lima kicked a pair of PATs.

Zane Trace (3-7, 3-4) cut the Mustang lead in half on Jam George's one yard run and Cody Williams' PAT kick midway through the second quarter.

However, Angles gathered in the ensuing kickoff and was off to the races with a touchdown that restored Westfall's 14-point lead. Lima added another extra point and booted his first field goal -- 22 yards -- on the last play of the first half.

Redman added another pair of touchdowns in the third period on runs of 38 and eight yards to finish with 138 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. Lima added PATs after each score.

Redman -- who broke Westfall's season rushing record last week -- entered Friday night's regular season finale needing just 121 yards to break the school's career rushing record. His 2,749 yards surpass Tyler Baesman's previous record of 2,732.

Westfall records date from 1980 when former Mustang coach Clarence Perry began accumulating statistical information.

Angles caught five passes for 75 yards to top the previous school record for career pass receiving set by Brian Dollison. Angles' 1,388 total surpass Dollison's 1,342.

Zane Trace -- which started two seniors on offense and three on defense -- was led by George's 67 yards on 17 carries and freshman Ben Haynes wit four pass receptions for 62 yards.

Justin Wiseman had nine tackles, George and Curtis Chaffin eight each and Brandyn Street seven for the Pioneers, who had two passes intercepted and lost two fumbles.

Wesfall, which had just one turnover, outgained Zane Trace 296-180.

Pioneers throw scare into Paint Valley
10/03/03

Held scoreless by Zane Trace in the first half, unbeaten Paint Valley survived the Pioneers' upset bid with a decisive third quarter for a 21-0 win in Scioto Valley Conference football Friday night.

Paint Valley's first touchdown was set up by a short punt giving the Bearcats possession inside the Zane Trace 20-yard line. Zac McFadden took advantage of the opportunity with a five-yard run and Drew Bobb kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 8:22 left in the third quarter.

Within a span of 2:26 late in the quarter, quarterback Travis Tatman hit the 6-5 Bobb with a touchdown bombs of 27 and 47 yards. Bobb was hit after both catches, but was able to break tackles en route to the end zone.

McFadden's halfback pass to Joe Depugh gave Paint Valley a two-point conversion after Bobb's second touchdown.

Zane Trace was able to stay in the game despite just 111 yards of offense.

Justin Wiseman led the Pioneer defense with 15 tackles while Jam George had 11 tackles and a sack, Brandyn Street 11 tackles, freshman Ben Haynes six solo and three assisted tackles and Brian Burdett eight tackles.

George was the leading rusher for Zane Trace with 73 yards on 15 carries.

Tatman completed 19 of 34 passes for 265 yards as the Bearcats were limited to 63 yards on the ground.

Adena blanks Pioneers 19-0
09/19/03

Adena scored two touchdowns in the final 1:14 to seal a 19-0 win over Zane Trace and a 2-0 start in Scioto Valley Conference football Friday night.

Sophomore Colton Coy continued to shred opposing defenses as the Warrior tailback ran for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.

Coy gave Adena (3-2 overall) a 6-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter with a 16-yard scoring run before the defense for both sides took over.

Coy reached the end zone on a 25-yard run with 1:14 left in the game and Brian Grigsby picked off a Pioneer pass and bolted 75 yards for the clinching score. Rob Bronner kicked the final PAT for the Warriors.

Zane Trace ran 64 plays to Adena's 48, but critical penalties stymied an early Pioneer drive deep into Warrior territory and again in the fourth quarter.

"We were just one play away," Zane Trace head coach Daron Myers lamented.

Adena limited Zane Trace to 67 yards rushing and 99 yards through the air -- picking off four of the Pioneers' 30 passes -- while running for 247 yards.

Jam George led Zane Trace offensively and defensively with 38 yards on 11 carries and 17 tackles. Brandyn Street had 12 tackles and linebacker Miles Wright 10 tackles and one and a-half sacks. The Pioneers sacked Grigsby four times.
